We all hate them!
And unfortunately ingrown hairs are much more common when you use wax to remove hair. The reason for this is because when you wax, it pulls the hair right out from your skin at the root and when a new hair grows it is much harder for it to penetrate the skin’s surface. But we have a few tips to stop this happening so keep reading!
But first things first – what is an ingrown hair?
Ingrown hairs are when a hair grows under the top layers of your skin. Sometimes you will be able to see it, but when you run your finger over your skin, you will feel that it has not actually penetrated the surface of the skin. It is growing underneath.
Ingrown hairs can also be identified by a red bump on your skin. It can sometimes be very painful if the hair has been growing under the skin for a long time. The skin around the hair will react and form a red bump that looks like a pimple or a zit. Particularly in Bangkok where is it so hot, ingrown hairs are event more uncomfortable.
So how to avoid them?
As mentioned above, unfortunately ingrown hairs are more common when you wax. But there are a few easy ways to help prevent this!
- Use a good quality body scrub daily – Especially in the weeks after your wax, use a good moisturising body scrub to make sure your skin is rid of excess dead skin.
- Invest in a good quality loofah – similar to the scrub above, if you suffer from ingrown hairs, a loofah is your best friend. Gently scrub your skin with the loofah to remove the stubborn dry, dead skin. Even when you are currently suffering from ingrown hairs, if they are mild and not too sore, use a loofah gently over the affected area to help release the hairs growing under the skin.
- Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise – we can’t say it enough! Moisturising daily is the perfect prevention for avoiding ingrown hairs. By making your skin supple and smooth, the hairs will have an easier time re-growing.
If you follow the above steps before and after you wax you should minimise and hopefully prevent ingrown hairs!
